Re-Configurations
I have been working on a new body of work since moving into my new studio in East London (Bow Arts, Three Waters). This series of paintings is done using acrylic paint on canvas, which is a departure from my oil and varnish on wood paintings (made between 2014-2022). Acrylic offers a fresh perspective for me on composition and mark making, and has inspired me to use new techniques and play with brush strokes. There is an immediacy to acrylic that I really love, which enables quick thinking and spontaneity. Gestures and sensations come to play directly on the surface of the canvas, in a similar way to drawing. This new direction in my practice runs in parallel with my drawing works on paper, in which I take inspiration from what I see and feel around me, and create compositions that are in a constant state of flux, developing and morphing as they go. Bodies, figures, spaces and places emerge in these works, and through the process of paintings and drawing, I begin to learn who and what these entities are, where they are going and what they may become.
